DAY 6 - TÕSTAMAA AND SAUGA were our destinations today. We left the beautiful Muhu Island this morning and headed toward Tõstamaa. The ferry was named after Piret, the beloved wife of the hero of Saaremaa, Tõll the Great. Piret managed really everything. She took care of their home and food, plowed and sowed the fields and made hay. Each day, Piret cooked a large pot of cabbage soup and baked a full oven of rye bread for Tõll.
She even helped her husband with construction. When Toll started to build a sauna, Piret assumed it as her task to gather huge stones for the fireplace. Alas, it so happened that one of the boulders fell out of Piret’s apron, against her toe and then into the ground. This boulder can still been seen by the manor house in Muhu. The stone, however, hurt the resilient yet delicate Piret so much that she burst into tears and cried, until the tears formed a swamp, known until this day under the name of Naestesoo, Women’s Swamp.
At 10 o’clock we arrived in Tõstamaa Craft Center and had an opportunity to admire local crafts. After some shopping we started a workshop on inlay knitting. Tõstamaa is really famous for the inlay knitted mittens and gloves. Lunch was served by Ermistu lake, where we also dipped in to clear our minds, as the fringes knitting is quite complicated. More fringes and inlay knitting in the afternoon as well. By the evening we arrived in Nurmeveski.
